FAQs
What is Surrogacy?
Surrogacy is a third party infertility solution. Surrogacy can be one of two forms traditional or gestational. A traditional surrogate is a woman who uses her own egg and either donor sperm or the intended fathers sperm to give life to a child for the intended parents, she is biologically related to the child she is carrying but will give it to the intended parents when the child is born. A gestational surrogate is a woman who carries a baby made from either the intended parents eggs and sperm or donated egg and sperm. The surrogate is not related to this child. You can also choose to go through and agency or go independent (or indy), each has its own set of benefits and deterrents. What form are you using? We have chosen to use a gestational surrogate so we can have a biological child of our own, since my eggs look harvestable. If for some reason we are unable to retrieve one of my eggs we will seek an egg donor. Is it legal? Yes, surrogacy is legal however some states have rules and regulations regarding surrogacy. In Washington State it is allowed however the surrogate is not allowed to receive any compensations for carrying the child, but is allowed to be reimbursed for medical and travel and other related expenses. There are many reasons couples choose surrogacy over other options, in our situation I no longer have a uterus so carrying my own child is impossible and we tried to adopt and the heart break that caused has successfully scared us away from that path any time soon. In some cases people are too young or too old to adopt. Adoption is a hard road, even if you get a placement there are too many variables, surrogacy is an emotionally safer bet and there are statistics that can provide piece of mind for intended parents. This is not to say adoption is not an amazing option for both parents and children, it is just saying that it is not for everyone. How much does it cost? This is the hardest question to answer, even after going through it intended parents have a hard time saying exactly how much it will cost. Here is the break down/ budget I am aware of:
Other costs that may apply: Agency fees: $3,000 - $15,000 Surrogate Comp: $0 - $50,000 Do you have a question? Please feel free to ask!! Email Me or comment below! |
